Chapter 3 Share Your Reading Life

After reading this chapter, I have learned how important it is to share my passion for reading with my students. I already share with my students my favorite children's author.  We start the school year out doing an author study on his books.  They love it!  They start checking those books out at the library when we go.  I have never thought about sharing the books that I read at home with them. After reading this chapter I realize how important it is to share with my students.

In the Chapter, it talks about the importance of being a reader if you want to teach reading.   I guess I never really thought of it that way. I see now that as a reader you can learn things about yourself. I do think we should try to get our students to love to read and want to read.  I think most students read because they have to read not because they want to read. I would love to have my students grow into life long readers.  At the end of the chapter it says to show students what brings you pleasure as a reader. I am going to try to bring my passion of reading into  my classroom.

  1. It seems like it is something so simple that often makes the difference. Sharing a book, your life, and the authors that you love really can inspire students. They look at you as the celebrity of the class and if you are doing it, then they want to do it too! That is why sharing is so important and for them to be validated as readers by sharing at the close of your independent reading time. First grade is the perfect time to inspire that love of reading--then they will continue to read and grow in confidence and ability as a result!
