Karen Davis Blog Post #2 Routman, Teach With a Sense of Urgency

In this chapter Routman provides excellent descriptions and examples of how to move toward a true balanced literacy approach.  She strongly encourages teachers to model and share their thinking during reading and writing.  She promotes independence, but not without careful demonstrations and if necessary; reteaching.  This is very valuable information.  I was inspired to slow down when necessary and give time and explicit demonstration as well as guided practice.  I often find the urgency causing many of us to move too quickly.  Great chapter!

  1. I'm glad that you are enjoying the Routman book. I feel like it is perfect for what we are doing as we improve our instruction in reading. Developing our own versions of the optimal learning model for the benefit of our students is crucial to help our students grow toward independence in reading and writing. I can think of no more important grade than first grade. If they leave first grade as confident, able readers, then they will continue to read and grow in the years to come. Moving too quickly cover this or that is not the answer. The urgency is to provide the engaging opportunities and the support that they need to become the readers that will succeed.
