Alison Martin Chapter 5 Organize an Outstanding Classroom Library

After reading Chapter 5, Organize an Outstanding Classroom Library I feel better about all the time I spent this summer organizing my classroom library. Routman states, " Classroom libraries are a literacy necessity." My classroom library is still a work in progress. After reading this chapter I realized I don't have enough books. The chapter states that a good classroom library has at least 200 books!!  As a teacher we do spend lots of our own money on books and classroom libraries. I think it is great that our school is helping us this year by buying us knew books.  As a teacher, I am always looking for ways to get things donated to my classroom.

I like the idea of getting the students involved in developing the classroom library. I think the students will have ownership in the library so they would use it more. The library would also have books that the students are interested in reading instead of what I think they would like to read.  This chapter gave me lots of new ideas to use in my classroom library.

  1. It is all about the student! Our classroom libraries should definitely reflect their needs, interests, and involvement. I think of my own children and their excitement to go to the library or bookstore as they were growing up. That is the excitement I wanted my students to feel when they accessed my classroom library. That is why having their input and interests as an important element in its design makes it not about the teacher or "school" but its all about the student. They naturally love that!
