Elaine Wilkins - Blog Post #4

Having read Section One of the Debbie Miller book "No More Independent Reading Without Support".  I find myself to be in the same situation as the Baltimore teachers wondering how I can add anything else to my already crowed calendar.  Is agree with Miller in that we need to prioritize things to find time in the day when we are redundant and unnecessary routines.  I know that this is something that I struggle with.  Not only at work but also in my personal life.  Sometimes I feel my plate is so full how am I going to get every thing done efficiently.  As things are being added to our curriculum, we don't realize that we need to let some things go (by that I mean there are somethings that we have been doing routinely that could be possibly change the amount of time we're using or not to do that task at all).  I'm one of the people who come in early and stay late in an effort to get myself organized but it still does not seem I have enough time in the day.  I think I'm going to try what Miller suggested the Baltimore teacher do and right down everything I do throughout the day.  You'd think it already is by using my plans but I do so much more.

  1. This is a great time to look at your routines. Even though December and all of its special activities can play havoc on our schedules, January is a great time to make beneficial changes. Instead of changing everything, I would suggest finding one swap or simplification that you can make giving priority to what is most beneficial to the growth of your students.

  2. That's a great idea, Elaine! By writing everything down we actually do in a day, it is easier to see what directly relates to students' growth--and what things aren't. That's a wonderful place to start finding time!!
